Wow, what a crazy couple of weeks. The Olympics have come and gone and as a sense of normalcy comes back to the city, I should be able to start posting more often again. Here’s some quick links from the past week:

    1. Outside Magazine has crowned Tofino as North America’s Best Surf Town.
    2. Olympic champion Clara Hughes will be using her $10,000 winner’s bonus to help the Take a Hike Foundation.
    3. A new baby orca has been spotted off Vancouver Island. (via @Raincoster)
    4. Rock climbing could become an Olympic sport for the 2020 games.
    5. Warmer weather brings avalanche warnings for BC.
    6. A new book points to North Vancouver’s Best Hikes.
    7. BC Parks no haven for grizzly bears targeted by trophy hunters.
    8. Packing heat is now permitted in American National Parks.

    It’s been a while since I posted so there are a lot of links today (mostly unrelated to the Olympics):

    1. Gordon Campbell recently cut the ribbon for Grouse Mountain’s Eye of the Wind.
    2. Kayak Yak tells us that west coast waves are getting taller each year (by about 2.5cm per year!).
    3. Google has expanded Street view to ’snowmobile view’ for Whistler.
    4. Speaking of Whistler, did you ever wonder how it got its name?
    5. An Alberta man lost his life in an avalanche in Revelstoke.
    6. A doctor in Clearwater also fell victim to an avalanche his home town.
    7. Mt. Seymour and the Yeti are preparing to welcome the world’s snowshoers.
    8. Gadling gave Squamish the nod as one of the Top Ten Great Destinations for Outdoor Adventure.
    9. I stumbled on this great list of bicycle clubs in Vancouver.
    10. National Geographic Adventure took a close look at what our wonderful province has to offer your adventurous side.
    11. A tourist trapped on a ski-lift in the Austrian Alps avoided death by burning his cash.
    12. CNV gives preliminary nod to Lower Lonsdale cycling race.
    13. A 42 year old woman was lucky to survive a serious fall from Grouse’s Dam mountain.

    1. We’re less than a week away from the Olympics and the torch celebrations are coming to Metro Vancouver. Miss604 has a complete list of torch relay celebrations around town.

    1. VANOC & IOC say Cypress will be ready for the Olympics, thanks to workers tolling around the clock with the aide of 2 helicopters, mine trucks, and snow moving equipment.
    2. The best snowshoers from around the world will be in Vancouver Feb 27 for the World Snowshoe Invitational.
    3. Get Out There Magazine has the results from a reader’s poll on various Canadian outdoor events, including best hiking, best Marathon, etc.
    4. Winter Hiking: How to Stay Warm when the Temperatures are Cold.
    5. Ahead of the Olympics, North Shore Rescue members participated in a ‘recert’ with Blackcomb helicopters.
    6. And if you want to know how to increase your odds of surviving a 30,000 ft. free fall without a parachute ( hey, it could come in handy) you can read this article. But seriously, it’s an interesting read.
