Public Dirt Jump Track Approved For Vanier Park

I’m a few days late getting to posting about this, but on Monday night the Vancouver Dirt Jump Coalition received the answer they wanted from the Vancouver Park Board on  a proposed jump track in Vanier Park. Vanier Park, located in Kits Point, will be Vancouver’s first ’sanctioned’ mountain bike/ BMX park. The proposed track site drew some opposition from local residents and Squamish First Nation, but ultimately was approved by the board based on the recommendations of the Vancouver Park Board.

Vancouver is Awesome was able to get this quote from Chris Youg, lead member of the Vancouver Dirt Jump Coalition:

“Last night the Vancouver Park Board Commissioners voted unanimously in favour of the proposed Dirt Jump park in Vanier Park. With the Park Board office beyond capacity with BMX and Mountain Bikers, the group listened in on delegations presenting in favour of the park, with no parties speaking against. One-by-one the Commissioners expressed their positive thoughts about the project, and thanked those whose hard work has made this possible. Opinions were expressed to ensure that the park will be designed with elements for all levels of riding, from young children right up to advanced users. And, that the park should be designed in such a way to fit in with Vanier Park, which could be done with landscaping. The project was given the blessing by the Vancouver’s Bicycle Advisory Committee.”

“One of the delegates, a mother who came to express her thoughts commended the Park Board on the approval process. She was impressed, and expressed how pleased she was with the inclusion of the community, Vanier Park stakeholders, and interested parties all were heard on this proposal. Multiple generations were in the room with her to see a positive outcome, which will hopefully inspire more youth to be involved.”

“Very special thanks go out to Commissioner Sarah Blyth for her dedication to this project, and the rest of the Park Board Commissioners for keeping their promise of engaging the youth and keeping them active as one of their platforms. Mark Vulliamy and Park Board staff have also been vital to making the Dirt Jump park a reality.”

Trans Canada Trail

If you’ve ever walked along the Sea Wall, you’ve walked a section of the Trans Canada Trail. The Trans Canada Trail is a recreational trail being built that, when completed, will stretch across the entire county, going through every Territory and Province. Canada already has the world’s longest National highway, point-to-point (the Trans Cananda Hwy is 7,821 kilometres), but this will be something to really boast about!

The Trans Canada Trail is a 21,500-kilometre recreational trail winding its way through every province and territory, from the Atlantic to Pacific to Arctic Oceans. When completed, it will be the world’s longest recreational trail, linking close to 1000 communities and over 33 million Canadians. Today almost 70 percent (14,500 kilometres) is developed. Thousands of people are taking to the Trail to walk, hike, cycle, ski, horseback ride, canoe and snowmobile.

Most of the TCT  incorporates existing trails but there’s still a lot of work to be done connecting them all. You can search from the site to find the section of the trail near you, its progress, and even download GPS coordinates.

KEEN is also helping to sponsor the trail with the Boots Across Canada program. For every picture of a pair of boots on a Canadian trail submitted between May 1 – October 31 2009, KEEN will donate $5 to the development of the trail (with a goal of 15,000 boots). So next time you’re out hiking, snap a pic of those boots and send it in. Can’t get much simpler than that! Details below:

How to participate in the Boots Across Canada program

2. Take a photo of your boots (or shoes!)
3. Visit www.keencanada.ca and upload a photo.
4. For every pair of boots (shoes) taken on a Canadian trail, KEEN Canada will donate $5 to the Trans Canada Trail and the Bruce Trail Conservancy. One picture with 1 pairs of boots (shoes)=$5 donation from KEEN. One picture with 10 pairs of boots (shoes)=$50 donation from KEEN.

By uploading your photos of your Boots Across Canada, you will be …
Sharing the Trans Canada Trail’s vision of completing the world’s longest recreational trail across Canada and linking over 33 million Canadians.

As of today there are only 96 boots submitted, so get going! You also might want to subscribe to the Trans Canada Trail Newsletter to keep up to date with its development.

Greater Vancouver Municipality Bike Maps

Karl Woll | May 28, 2008 4:41 pm

I recently posted a bike map for the City of Vancouver, that is a good guide for cycling around the city. I have since found this site, put together by Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition, that has bike route maps for all the surrounding municipalities. May be a bit late for bike to work week, but still useful.

Trail Guides: Biking in Vancouver

Karl Woll | May 9, 2008 5:54 pm

I guess this isn’t really a trail guide, but if you aren’t aware, the City of Vancouver has made a useful map of all biking routes around the city. For those of you who use your bike to commute around the city, you can view the detailed bike route map here.
